Passing Through

Carmina Escobar, 'Passing through dimensions' Spread in Reader No.4, 2017

Art Los Angeles Reader issue No. 4 is out! Find it around town at galleries, museums, non-profit spaces, hotels, shops, and cafes across Los Angeles and Mexico City, or online at reader.la.

Titled "Soñodores," a reference to the Dream Act, the issue is a collaboration with Mexico City’s Terremoto in honor of Pacific Standard Time LA/LA.

It features Alma Ruiz writing on art after PST, Anthony Carfello on how Taco Bell architecture tells us the history Southern California, Suzy Halajian on the radical art collective Asco, and Eunsong Kim and Gelare Khoshgozaran on the Caribbean artist Monica Rodriguez. Natalia Mendoza and Miguel Fernández de Castro consider the concept of frontier at the Mexico/U.S. border, Eduardo Abaroa and Rubén Ortíz-Torres discuss the art climate of LA vs. Mexico City, Arden Decker reflects on “Radical Women” at the Hammer, and Joey Terrill illustrates the cross-generational narrative of queer Chicanx and Latinx artists in LA. A visual contribution of film stills by Etienne de France is incorporated as well.

The issue also includes a special artist project by performance artist Carmina Escobar. She creates a visual score that instructs the viewer to turn the newspaper into an instrument, to be activated in full during a live performance at ALAC 2018.
